QR Code vs Barcode: What's the Difference?

1D vs 2D, data capacity, phone scanning โ€” when to use each and why QR won marketing.

Both store data visually, but they're built for different jobs.

The core difference

A barcode (1D) stores data in one direction โ€” vertical stripes read by a laser. It holds about 20โ€“25 characters: enough for a product number. A QR code (2D) stores data both horizontally and vertically, holding up to ~4,000 characters: links, text, contact cards, Wi-Fi credentials.

Why QR codes won for marketing

  1. Every phone scans them โ€” no special hardware needed.
  2. They're scannable from any angle and still work when partly damaged.
  3. They can link directly to the web, which is what marketing needs.

When barcodes still win

Retail checkout and inventory: laser scanners read barcodes faster at volume, and the infrastructure is decades old. For anything customer-facing on a phone, QR is the answer.
